Lijing Zheng
Lijing Zheng (b. 1997) received her BFA (2021) and MFA (2024) from the Mural Painting Department of the China Academy of Art.
Working in tempera on wood panel, Zheng paints pale, monumental figures against richly patterned grounds drawn from Chinese folk traditions. Influenced by her upbringing in Fujian and fieldwork among ethnic minority communities, her practice reinterprets vernacular symbols within a contemporary context.
Her use of tempera engages a lineage from Giotto to Andrew Wyeth, while redirecting it toward a distinct pictorial logic rooted in Chinese painting, where line constructs form. Flattened compositions, intertwined figures, and recurring motifs such as flames and birds echo both Dunhuang mural traditions and modernist spatial compression.
Zheng’s work has been presented at ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair (2025), Art Shenzhen (2024, 2025), and exhibitions across Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou.
