Exhibition Introduction
Syncretic Ornament marks the first solo exhibition in China by London-based artist Zorg (Yifan Jing), presented at Luan Gallery. Rooted in long-term ethnographic engagement within a diverse community in East London, the exhibition explores how cultural symbols, spiritual traditions, and vernacular aesthetics converge and transform in shared urban spaces.
Over months of fieldwork, Zorg gathered stories, observed rituals, and documented motifs embedded in daily life—ranging from Buddhist icons and Coptic crosses to Islamic geometry, Egyptian figures, and folk embellishments. These elements, rather than existing as isolated signs, intertwine to form a hybrid visual language that reflects coexistence, negotiation, and renewal across cultural boundaries.
At the heart of the project lies the recurring motif of the window—an architectural threshold between public and private, inside and outside—which Zorg reimagines as a compositional frame. Through this lens, the artist layers encounters, ornamental logic, and community narratives into complex works that embody both memory and transformation.
By treating ornament not as surface decoration but as a medium of storytelling and survival, Syncretic Ornament highlights how visual languages can emerge in spaces of encounter. The exhibition ultimately proposes ornament as a dynamic archive—one that preserves difference while making room for new forms of shared meaning and becoming.
